Tirich Mir Expedition
Tirich mir is the highest mountain in the Hindukush range at 7,708m/25,288ft. It is located in the Chitral region of Pakistan. The adjacent glacier shares the same name. North Barum, upper and lower Tirichs are the other glaciers nearby.
Tirich mir expedition starts in Islamabad. The conventional route to the summit traverses Chitral – Reshun and Khosht-Drakhshan – Zani pass – Shagram and Shaikh Naik. There is additionally a shorter route to the summit. After a two-hour jeep ride on the Chitral-Mastuj road, climbers must take a direct route from Perpish to Barum village and then traverse the Barum glacier to reach the summit. This route is advised only for those who have acclimated to high altitudes through previous climbing; otherwise, there is a high risk of altitude sickness.
The first ascent of Tirich Mir Main Peak was accomplished in 1950 by a Norwegian team led by Arne Naess. H. Berg and P. Kvern Berg were the other members of the expedition. The expedition was also accompanied by Professor Hammed Baig of the Karakoram Club (Pakistan), who attained an altitude of over 6,096 meters/20,000 feet, a significant accomplishment for the time. Captain Tony Streather of the Chitral Scouts joined the expedition out of Drosh and ultimately scaled Tirich Mir. Kvernberg was also located on the peak’s summit.
In 1951, the Karakoram Club led an expedition to Tirich Mir, Pakistan’s first such effort. Mian Abdul Rauf led the expedition, which included Daud Beg, Arshad Munir, and Captain Shaukat Malik. It established three advance camps and reached 6,553 meters/21,500 feet before abandoning the expedition due to lack of supplies. Our Tirich mir expedition start and finish in Islamabad.
