Karakorum Highway Biking tour
The most remarkable cycling tour in the world, Karakoram Highway Bike Tour, passes through Hunza, a region believed to have inspired James Hilton’s Shangri-La. By means of the Karakoram Highway, this 14-day bicycle journey spans the entire length of the breathtaking valleys of Gilgit, Hunza, Gulmit, Passu, and Sost. As it travels through the tight valleys of this remote mountain kingdom, the KKH connects Pakistan to China and is considered an engineering marvel. This famed route, completed in 1974, follows the old Silk Road and enters China at the Khunjerab Pass (16,000 feet), where our journey begins.
To reach our starting point (Khunjerab Pass), we fly from Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, to Gilgit at an altitude of 4,770 feet (weather permitting). Then, we are carried by jeeps to the summit of Khujerab Pass in two days, with a hotel stay in Gulmit or Sost.
From the summit of the pass, our three-day, five-hour descent to Gulmit is very straightforward. At Gulmit, a day of rest is planned. This affords the opportunity for a day journey into the depths of this breathtaking valley. Hunza’s capital, Karimabad, is our next destination. In the surrounding glacial valley of Hoper, one can engage in some arduous mountain riding. The final phase of our journey is a two-day journey to Gilgit. The magnificent wall of Rakaposhi (25,550 feet) rises from the bank of the Hunza River, beyond the Karakoram Highway, with a gain of 20,000 feet, making it the world’s most precipitous location. With the image of Rakaposhi still fresh in our minds, we arrive in Gilgit and fly or drive back to Islamabad.
